Bindery & Specialty Finishing
Bindery is a catch phrase for the manufacturing & finishing steps necessary to turn a flat piece of paper into a neatly trimmed sales sheet, a card with multiple folds, or a multi-page brochure, among many other configurations. It also encompasses the special techniques that add color to the edges of your invitation or make your piece extra heavy through mounting.
While much importance is placed on print manufacturing and various specialty processes, the devil will remain in the details when bindery steps are expertly carried through to create a lasting impression.
What to know bindery & specialty finishing
- Almost perfect. In every aspect of manufacturing there is a slight fluctuation, or tolerance, that must be taken into account. If precision is of the utmost importance in your project, involve the manufacturer early in the process to ensure that bindery specifications support your goals for the assignment.
- Let it be. Every set of post-press, pre-bindery instructions takes into account the important step of drying time.
- Duplexing or mounting adheres different stocks together and can give a thicker feel, or show through in a diecut piece.
- Proper folding is key – without it, paper can crack and folds can be uneven. It’s important to watch this during the finishing as it can effect the final quality of the piece.
- For cover weight papers and solids scoring may be necessary
- Envelopes can be lined with paper, tissue or printed with a custom pattern.
- Edge painting or gilding applies ink or foil to the edge of item. Thicker papers are best to achieve impact.
- Binding can be done in a number of different ways including saddle stitching, perfect binding, french folding, grommeting or wire. We can help establish the best way to combine your piece.
